Haltering Rescue Horses with Consent

Even a little resistance in your horse is still resistance.

When you want to befriend your horse you want Consent in everything you do (ideally). We have to understand that haltering is NOT easy or normal for a horse.

Haltering is scary business for most horses (at first)

When you have been around well trained horses all your live you wouldn’t give haltering a second thought. When you’ve ever tried to halter a wild horse, a mustang or a foal for the first time: you know better.

Haltering means: controlling their head and therefor also (partly) their body. Can you imagine what it would be like, to get gear around your head and then pulled on a lead rope where ever the alien wanted you to go? Or tie you up without friends and leave you?

When you place yourself in your horses shoes (lol pun intended), and imagine that people are Aliens. Often unfamiliar strangers, you get a picture of how rescue horses might feel being haltered.

Good news is…

You can help your rescue to overcome his anxiety and resistance when you build a bond based on mutual understanding, two-way communication and listening. And yes, some techniques to help your horse do this.
